Ghosting is for Phones, Not Schools: Building Meaningful Connections on Campus
Friday April 25, 2025 9:15am - 10:15am PDT
Join Principal Chris Fore as he shares how the staff at Mojave High School (Hesperia, CA) is fostering meaningful connections with students through the "Each One, Reach One" philosophy in the seminar, "Ghosting is for Phones, Not Schools: Building Meaningful Connections on Campus." Over the past two years, the school has implemented various new programs designed to deepen student engagement. These efforts have yielded impressive results, as reflected in the Youth Truth Survey, with a 15% increase in student engagement, a 14% boost in school culture, and a 24% improvement in students’ sense of belonging and peer collaboration. This holistic approach has also positively impacted graduation and attendance rates.

Beyond the Think-Pair-Share: Creating Conversations in the Alt.Ed Classroom
Friday April 25, 2025 10:30am - 11:30am PDT
Getting students to collaborate in meaningful ways is hard work. This session aims to create a structured approach to build collaboration in the alternative classroom. We will discuss practical techniques to first build a foundation for conversations in which all students feel safe and confident to participate. We will also explore structured conversation strategies to facilitate group discussions. Participants will leave with actionable strategies to implement in their classrooms.

“What is wrong with that kid?” Part 1. Navigating challenging behavior.
Friday April 25, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm PDT
In this workshop, we will look at the foundational aspects of behavior and how childhood experiences can shape a person’s behavior and academic success. The experiences that happen in early childhood have an impact on our brains, and we will go through just enough neurobiology so that you can impress your friends and coworkers who did not attend this workshop. We will see what is going on in the brain when a person experiences trauma, particularly at a young age. These behavioral changes apply to both students and adults!

In alternative education, we encounter many students with challenging behavior. But what is going on in the brain of a “misbehaving” child? And how do we approach behavior in a way that will create meaningful and lasting changes in the child?

“What is wrong with that kid?” Part 2. How to help students (and maybe adults) with challenging behavior.
Friday April 25, 2025 3:30pm - 4:30pm PDT
In this workshop, we will pick up where Part 1 left off and explore how we can help correct behavior that comes from childhood trauma. This is the “good news” half of the presentation. The neurobiological changes we saw in Part 1 are not life sentences! The brain changes, and we can help even our most challenging students (and coworkers) to respond in more prosocial ways. This workshop will have both long-term strategies for creating a campus that can change kids as well as immediate, “try this on Monday” strategies to survive until the end of the school year.
